3CX SIP trunk setup: add a ZuteSIP number as a generic SIP trunk

Short answer: To add a SIP trunk in 3CX, open the admin settings, go to Voice & Chat, choose Add Trunk and pick a generic VoIP provider. Enter sip.zutesipdialer.com as the registrar, your number's SIP username and password as the authentication ID and password, set the main trunk number to your ZuteSIP number, then create inbound and outbound rules.

3CX treats any standards-based SIP account as a generic trunk, so a real ZuteSIP number plugs in without special templates. This page walks through the fields, the routing rules and the fixes for the problems people hit most often.

What you need before you start

  • A ZuteSIP number (mobile, local or toll-free) in any of 181 countries. Each number includes unlimited incoming calls, 1,000 outgoing minutes per month and its own SIP credentials.
  • The SIP username and password for that number, shown on the number's page in the ZuteSIP dashboard.
  • A 3CX system (self-hosted or hosted) and an admin login. Some hosted 3CX editions restrict which trunk types you can add, so check your plan if the generic option is missing.
  • Outbound access from the 3CX server to sip.zutesipdialer.com on port 5060 (UDP/TCP) or 5061 (TLS), plus your usual RTP port range.

ZuteSIP settings for 3CX

These are the only values 3CX needs from us. Every number has its own username and password, so if you add several numbers, add one trunk per number or ask support how to group them.

Step-by-step: add the SIP trunk in 3CX

Menu names below follow 3CX's own V20 documentation as of September 2026. In V20 the admin area is reached from the cog icon in the web client; older V18 systems have a separate management console with a SIP Trunks menu instead. If a label on your screen differs, look for the equivalent field.

  1. Sign in to 3CX as an administrator and open the admin settings (the cog icon in V20).
  2. Go to Voice & Chat and choose Add Trunk.
  3. For country select Generic, and for provider select the generic VoIP provider / generic SIP trunk template.
  4. Enter your ZuteSIP number in international format as the main trunk number.
  5. Set the registrar or SIP server to sip.zutesipdialer.com and the port to 5060. If your 3CX build lets you choose TLS for the trunk, use port 5061 instead.
  6. Choose register/account based authentication and enter <SIP_USERNAME> as the Authentication ID and <SIP_PASSWORD> as the Authentication Password.
  7. In the codec list, keep PCMU (G.711 µ-law) and PCMA (G.711 A-law) at the top; remove codecs ZuteSIP does not offer if 3CX lets you.
  8. Add your number to the trunk's DID list, save, and wait for the trunk status to turn green (registered).

Inbound routing: send the DID to an extension or queue

Calls to your ZuteSIP number arrive with the number itself as the DID. In 3CX, open the inbound rules section, create a rule for the DID <YOUR_NUMBER> and pick a destination for office hours and for out-of-office hours, such as an extension, ring group or IVR on your PBX.

If calls reach the trunk but land on the default route, the DID in the rule does not match what arrives. Compare the number format shown in the 3CX call log (with or without the leading plus and country code) and adjust the rule to match.

Outbound calls and caller ID

Create an outbound rule that sends the dialing pattern you want (for example numbers starting with + or 00) to the new trunk. Strip or prepend digits so the called number leaves 3CX in full international format.

Set the outbound caller ID on the trunk or per extension to your ZuteSIP number. Use the number that belongs to the SIP credentials on that trunk. Outgoing calls use the number's 1,000 included minutes per month.

Troubleshooting 3CX and ZuteSIP

  • 401 Unauthorized or 403 Forbidden: the Authentication ID or password is wrong, or has spaces copied in. Re-copy both from the dashboard and confirm the registrar is exactly sip.zutesipdialer.com.
  • Trunk stays red: the server cannot reach port 5060/5061. Check the host firewall and any upstream firewall, and run the 3CX firewall checker if your edition has one.
  • One-way or no audio: usually NAT. Make sure the 3CX public IP is set correctly and the RTP port range is forwarded to the PBX; disable SIP ALG on the router.
  • Call fails with 488 Not Acceptable Here: codec mismatch. Keep PCMU and PCMA enabled on the trunk.
  • IVR menus do not react to key presses: set DTMF to RFC 2833 on the trunk; try SIP INFO only if the far end needs it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a ZuteSIP number as a 3CX SIP trunk?

Yes. ZuteSIP works with any SIP-compliant system, and 3CX's generic provider template accepts the server, username and password from your dashboard.

Which port should 3CX use?

Use 5060 over UDP or TCP. Use 5061 if you configure the trunk for TLS.

Do I need one trunk per number?

Each ZuteSIP number has its own SIP username and password, so the simplest setup is one trunk per number.

How many outgoing minutes do I get through 3CX?

Each number includes 1,000 outgoing minutes and 500 outgoing SMS per month, plus unlimited incoming calls and SMS.

Can 3CX record calls on this trunk?

Call recording is not part of the ZuteSIP service. Any recording would be a feature of your own PBX, subject to its settings and local law.

Can I call emergency services through the trunk?

No. Emergency calls are not supported on ZuteSIP numbers, so keep another line for emergencies.
