Number Porting

Short answer: Number porting (local number portability) is the process of moving an existing phone number from one service provider to another so you keep the same number. Regulators such as the FCC require carriers to allow porting, and most countries have similar rules.

Porting is common when switching mobile carriers or moving a business line to a VoIP provider, and it usually requires matching account details from the current provider.

How it works

  1. You request a port with the new provider, supplying account number, PIN and name exactly as the old provider has them.
  2. The new provider sends the port request to the current provider for validation.
  3. Routing databases are updated so calls and texts reach the new provider.
  4. The old service ends for that number.
