The candy-focused Willy Wonka of the online slot world, Pragmatic Play, is back at it with another tooth-busting game going by the name of Sugar Twist. If it sounds kinda similar to the 2022 super hit release Sugar Rush, the similarities go beyond just the name. In essence, Sugar Twist is a very close clone of Sugar Rush, where the actual twists mainly boil down to a few cosmetic symbol changes and one admittedly notable stat increase.
Even the background is basically the same, if not exactly the same, apart from the displayed game title. This means players return to a pinky, purply, sugary, sweetie, candy domain, a classic setting for slots populating this particular gaming category. A frosting-topped 7x7 game grid takes centre stage, surrounded by a winning tumble tracker, bonus buy button and other various UI elements. Deja vu so far.
Stats are where the progenitor and clone diverge, and Sugar Twist's headliner has to be its top 98% return to player value, not a typo. This value stays the same whether wagering 20 p/c to $/€100 on each individual paid spin or when buying free spins for the cost of 100 times the bet. For volatility, Pragmatic Play has rated this part of the math model a full 5 out of 5.
A win is created in Sugar Twist when at least 5 identical symbols land adjacent to each other in horizontal or vertical directions. The tumbling feature removes winning symbols from the grid and drops symbols down from above to replace them. As long as new wins hit, the tumbling feature will continue to trigger. Payout-wise, a 5-symbol wins awards 0.2 to 1 times the bet, whereas a 15+ sized cluster is worth 20 to 150 times the bet. All pay symbols are candies of one sort or another, and there are no wild symbols to be found in Sugar Twist.
Sugar Twist: Slot Features
Complementing the tumble feature is further features such as Multiplier Spots and a free spins bonus round.
Multiplier Spots
After a symbol has been removed from the grid by the tumble mechanic, its position is marked. When the next winning symbol hits in a marked spot, an x2 multiplier is attached to the position. From then on, when further winning symbols land in the same spot, the multiplier doubles in value up to a maximum of x128. Multipliers apply to all winning clusters they are part of, and when more than one multiplier is used in a win, the values are added together before being used. At the end of a base game spin, all multipliers in view are cleared from the gaming grid.
Free Spins
When 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 scatter symbols hit in the base game, players are awarded 10, 12, 15, 20, or 30 free spins, respectively. While the free spins feature is active, multiplier values are not removed from the reels when they appear. Only when the round ends are they cleared. Free spins can be retriggered, too, so when 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 scatter symbols hit an additional 10, 12, 15, 20, or 30 free spins are added to the remaining amount. When players buy the bonus round, a random number of 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 scatter symbols will land to trigger it.
Sugar Twist: Slot Verdict
Players who have been keeping tabs on what Pragmatic Play has been busy releasing should be well-clued up on what Sugar Twist is all about. This isn't the first time the studio has reused the Sugar Rush formula before, after all. For a slot with the same gameplay but a completely different look, Guarana Eyes of the Amazon might be what you're after. However, Guarana Eyes of the Amazon doesn't have the stellar RTP that Sugar Twist possesses, which is one of the game's biggest draws. In fact, since practically everything else about Sugar Twist is the same as Sugar Rush, the 98% return value, if you can get it, is about the most compelling selling point.
The rest of Sugar Twist was a case of seen it, done it all before, but that's no bad thing. Sugar Rush was a slot with a blend of flow and features which were easy to join in to see where it would go. Its rising position multipliers and tumbles combo put it alongside classics like the iconic Sweet Bonanza or even Gates of Olympus, though this one's not a scatter-playing game, of course. The point we're trying to make is that Sugar Rush was a game Pragmatic Play got the mix just so, and through the procedure of cloning, the same sweet mix has been transferred over to Sugar Twist. This includes the same win cap of 5,000x the bet.
Since so much else is the same, it wouldn't have been horrendously bad if Pragmatic Play had boosted Sugar Twist's winning potential to provide extra incentive to play. However, even if Pragmatic Play's decision to remake Sugar Rush with a higher return value might be up for discussion, as it stands, the larger-than-normal RTP is quite a sweetener in its own right and makes deciding whether to play this one or Sugar Rush an easy choice.
