According to a web search, under current US law, generally speaking, new films are copyrighted for 95 years before they enter the public domain (not legal advice btw). At the time of writing, it meant anything made from around 1928 and earlier is fair game. One outfit which appears not to want to wait that long is Pragmatic Play partner studio Reel Kingdom. The reason why is that its Arabic-themed online slot Lamp of Infinity looks a little bit, okay, a lot bit, like the Disney animated film Aladdin.
Released in 1992, Aladdin was based on the classic piece of Arabic literature One Thousand and One Nights. You know, the genie, the lamp, the wishes, all that sort of stuff. Lamp of Infinity doesn't explicitly mention the film Aladdin or the tales it was inspired by, but one quick look and it's hard not to get Aladdin vibes. A little too close to the original for comfort? Let's let players be the judge, or the courts if Disney or whoever owns Aladdin decide that lawyering up is the best course of action.
If your course of action is taking Lamp of Infinity for a spin, then bet options range from 20 p/c to $/€240 per game round, and there's an Ante Bet and bonus buy if you prefer. The Ante Bet increases the stake by 50% for the extra chance of getting bonus symbols, while the buy free spins option costs 100x the bet. Maximum RTP varies from 96.07% in the default mode, 96.08% for the Ante Bet, and 96.04% when buying the bonus round. Volatility is high and has been rated as 5 out of 5 by the game's makers.
Hosting the action is a 5-reel, 3-row gaming panel with just 5 paylines. On the lower side of the table are Q-A royals, followed by a sword, treasure chest, carpet, monkey, gemstone, and a palace-looking symbol. Hitting a 5 OAK win pays 2x for the royals or 5 to 100x the bet for the remaining pay symbols. The blue genie is wild, appearing on all reels to substitute for any regular pay symbol.
Lamp of Infinity: Slot Features
The base game has literally nada in terms of special features, so let's head straight to the free spins round. This is triggered when at least 3 bonus symbols land, awarding 8 free spins. During free spins, reels 3, 4, and 5 merge to create a 3x3-sized wild symbol for the full duration. In addition, the wild is given a random multiplier of x2, x3, x4, x5, x6, x7, x8, x9, or x10, which is applied to all wins during the round.
A tumble feature is also used in free spins. After any winning lines are paid, the winning symbols are removed by the tumble feature and symbols from above drop down to fill all empty positions. Tumbling continues like this until no new winning line is created.
Moreover, at the end of the free spins round, there is a chance the feature will randomly retrigger. If it does, then 8 more free spins are awarded, and a new multiplier is selected from the list of values mentioned above. Landing 4 or 5 bonus symbols in the base game guarantees 1 or 2 retriggers, respectively. Lastly, if the round ends with a winning total less than 18 times the bet, the round retriggers as well.
Lamp of Infinity: Slot Verdict
Playing Lamp of Infinity was a bit like buying a copy of Aladdin on DVD, only to find out you've got a pirated version made by someone who sat in a movie theatre back in the 90s, using 90s-level recording equipment to film the show. Or some third party looking to make a quick buck simply copied the film over using as many shortcuts as possible. Like those cheap plastic action figures, which are basically hollow when you take them out of the packet and see them from behind. Okay, that's all a bit over the top harsh, but such was the underwhelming effect Lamp of Infinity had when it popped up on screen and buzzed about for a bit like a genie that had used up its set number of wishes.
For one thing, the base game is a complete throwaway. It's got nothing going on with its low number of paylines, dearth of features, and generally low-level excitement. A couple of the symbols do offer decent values, but outside them, meh. The bonus round, too, wasn't as exciting as having a locked-in win multiplier and locked-in 3 reel wild symbol was made out to be. Again, the low number of paylines work to keep a lid on Lamp of Infinity getting too wild and crazy too often, so players probably shouldn't expect to rub magic out of the lamp on each free spin. Lamp of Infinity does have a win cap of 5,000x the bet, though, so some well-placed higher-tier premium symbols in just the right place, with a solid multiplier in the pocket, might be quite thrilling. Again, outside that, Lamp of Infinity doesn't have a whole lot going on for itself.
And so concludes the review of Lamp of Infinity. A bright-looking game and one with ballsy similarities to a classic Disney animated film. There are moments, if you're really lucky, to be had while playing Lamp of Infinity, but some players might find it tough to keep on battling through the in-between moments while stomaching the overall knockoff feel the game possesses.
