Some say superheroes blossomed in the public consciousness during the 1930s-1940s in what was called the Golden Age of Comic Books. Superman hit the scene in 1938, kickstarting the friendly rivalry between DC and Marvel, which continues down to this day. However, heroes have been around for far longer than that, perhaps ever since humans stood upright on two legs and began grunting at each other in an attempt to coordinate mammoth hunts. Fast forward a few years from then, and we come to the world of Legend of Heroes Megaways, an online slot from developer Pragmatic Play, packed with tumbles, Big Wilds, and free spins with an optional extra gamble element.
Sticking with the superhero angle just a little bit longer, like the way DC and Marvel have been accused of copying each other's work, Legend of Heroes Megaways is a copy of its own. Beneath the shiny, hero-laden veneer, the guts of the game have almost all been ripped from a previous Pragmatic Play slot titled Power of Thor Megaways. They've disguised it pretty well, though. Legend of Heroes Megaways drips with home-brand heroes in an intriguing gear-ridden world, where they're… doing heroic things presumably, though what exactly that might be is not elucidated on. The action is hosted on a game board made up of 6 reels and a 4 symbol horizontal tracking reel on top, creating up to 117,649 ways to win.
To win, spins have to land at least two of the top paying symbol or three of the rest of the regular pays, from the first reel onwards on adjacent reels. 9 to Ace card ranks make up the low pay tiles, while four heroes are used as the high pays, where a six symbol winning way pays 0.6-1.5x the bet for the card symbols or 2-20x the bet for the premiums. Lastly, the game comes with two wild symbols; one is the regular wild. Batman's utility belt might have been famous for containing all manner of gadgets, but Legend of Heroes Megaways doesn't have quite so much going on. What it has isn't bad, however, and consists of tumbles, big wilds, and free spins with an optional gamble stage.
Tumbles are available in the base and bonus game. When winning ways appear on screen, the symbols in them are removed and replaced with symbols dropping down from above. If the tumble leads to another win, the feature is repeated.
The big wild symbol appears only on the top reel and takes up two positions. When one hits as a 2-position wide symbol, all symbols below it on the reels are transformed into wilds. If a tumble moves the big wild to a new position, all symbols below it are turned into wilds. The wild transformations do not occur if the big wild is partially in view or does not move after a tumble.
Scatter symbols appear on all reels, and landing 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 of them awards 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, or 30 free spins, respectively. Before the bonus begins, if players win 10-18 free spins, they can gamble on a wheel to possibly collect more. The gamble takes place on a segmented wheel, and successful gambles add +4 spins up to a maximum of 22. Losing the gamble loses all of the free spins.
What changes in free spins is the game adds a progressive multiplier into the mix. The multiplier starts at x1 and increases by +1 following a tumble. Moreover, hitting 3 scatters during the feature awards +4 free spins.
One issue with picking non-brand heroes or those who have not appeared in myths and legends is they can come across as generic nobodies. There is a hint of this in Legend of Heroes Megaways, being a game littered with no-name characters who are hard to relate to. It doesn't help that Legend of Heroes Megaways is a clone (minus the bonus buy), thereby reinforcing the generic impression. However, Legend of Heroes Megaways manages to push through that, to a degree, due to its high production values and sturdy gameplay. Few can polish a game to a high gleam like Pragmatic Play can, and the studio has brought the full force of its polishing expertise to bear on Legend of Heroes Megaways. The result is an attractive slot that might be a copy and paste job but is a good-looking one, all the same
This might seem superficial, yet good looks did make it easier to see past Legend of Heroes Megaways clone status and just enjoy what it has to offer. Like its mould slot, Power of Thor Megaways, the features aren't exactly cutting-edge avant-garde stuff, but they're rock steady and can create some exciting action. In a nutshell, players are looking to slam down full reels of wilds from the big wild feature, preferably during free spins with a useful multiplier on board. Patience might well be required for that, though, since free spins triggers in Power of Thor Megaways had a frequency of 1 in 510, so maybe don't hold your breath. Potential, too, isn't great for a Megaways slot, as Pragmatic Play stuck to the 5,000x the bet win cap it employed in the previous game.
Power of Thor Megaways is a good litmus test for the potential enjoyment levels to be had if/when playing Legend of Heroes Megaways. If the Thor version ground your gears, so will this, whereas those who got their world rocked can replay that feeling all over again with a bunch of home brand heroes. The gaming's solid, the features too; it's just too bad Pragmatic Play couldn't have eased the win cap back a bit to give the clone follow-up a bit more oomph.
